Dr. Shanthi Johnson recently received the Female Professional of the Year Award from the Indo-Canadian Chamber of Commerce (ICCC). Johnson is a professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies and the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies.

The award was presented at the annual ICCC gala and awards night on June 14 in Toronto which  recognizes Indo-Canadians for their professional achievements and contributions to strengthening relations between Canada and India.

Dr. Johnson is an internationally-recognized leader and researcher in nutrition and physical activity in healthy aging and falls prevention among older adults. Maintaining a robust, multidisciplinary research program, Dr. Johnson has published widely and presented her work both nationally and internationally. In 2012, she was appointed to serve on the National Seniors Council, which provides advice to the Minister of Employment and Social Development, the Minister of Health, and the Minister of State (Seniors) for the Government of Canada.

In addition to her academic work, Dr. Johnson is also the President of the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute, a unique bi-national network of more than 90 universities and academic institutions in both countries. Through her work with Shastri, Dr. Johnson has been active in promoting Canada-India linkages in higher education through student mobility, research, and institutional partnerships.

Dr. Johnson is a registered dietitian and has been awarded fellow status with the Dietitians of Canada, as well as the American College of Sports Medicine.
